Legend has it, Blackbeard would kill for a warm slice of spiced cherry pie – and we understand why!
This sweet & boozy dessert OOZES deliciousness, with warm cherries smothered in a spiced bourbon sauce, all nestled into a crust so golden, Blackbeard once mistook it for treasure…(or so we’ve heard).
This dish is so good, you’ll wonder if you’ve died and gone to heaven…🥧
INGREDIENTS:
2 sheets of pie dough, refrigerated
3 lb frozen whole cherries, pitted
1/4 cup flour
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup granulated or brown sugar
1 orange (juiced & zested)
5 dashes of angostura bitters *optional
2 oz bourbon *optional
for egg-wash: 1 egg & 1 tbs milk/heavy cream

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 375.
2. In a small bowl, create a spice mixture by combining the flour, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Set aside.
3. To a medium saucepan over low/ med heat, add the cherries, bourbon, bitters, orange juice & zest. Stir to combine, then slowly mix in the spice mixture.
4. Allow mixture to thicken for 8- 10 minutes, or until the cherries start to release juices and create a thick sauce. Once thickened, set aside and let cool. Do not break the cherries down, allow them to keep their shape by gently stirring them around, they should soften slightly.
5. On a floured surface, roll out one sheet of pie dough into a 10-inch circle, then transfer dough to an 8-inch pie dish. There will be overhang.
6. Pour your cherry filling into the pie dish, on top of the dough. Spread evenly.
7. On your floured surface, roll out the second pie sheet into another 10-inch circle. Carefully cut out holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth. (you can add your own spooky flair to this step!)
8. Once your dough art is complete, gently transfer the sheet overtop of your pie dish…making sure artwork is centered and positioned how you’d like it. Then, carefully press the edges down with your fingers to slightly sealing the bottom and top crust edges.
9. Use a fork to fully seal the edges, then brush pie with egg wash, and sprinkle with sugar.
10. Bake in preheated oven for 50 – 60 minutes, or until the filling has reduced and the crust is golden brown.
ENJOY!
