Selling your home when you have pets by SAGA 3

Preparing your home to sell it can be very stressful, and that can transfer to your best friend

Our four-legged family members are an important part of our life, and have an important role to play. Living on the Outer Banks is a paradise for pets and their families with the miles of sandy beaches and sound access at our fingertips, plus amazing dog parks. But what if you’re ready to list your home and aren’t sure how to handle this with your rambunctious buddy around? Will they kill the deal? Will it stress them out having strangers in their home?

Here are some useful tips to help your pet and your home survive the listing and selling process.

1. | DOGGY DAY CARE

Don’t forget to bring his favorite toy to doggy daycare

If you expect to be showing your home for longer periods of time, like over a weekend, it’s a good idea to have his well-being planned in advance. We all love our pets, but not everyone feels the same way about your puff-ball as you do. If you can’t find a friend or neighbor nearby who is willing to have your pet over for a play-date, then research the best doggy daycares in the area. This may include your trusted veterinarian who offers overnight boarding.

2. | YARD DUTY

Be vigilant in this area, as no prospective buyer wants “you know what” on his or her shoe when they are taking a casual look around your yard. Be sure to keep the lawns manicured, and free of “doggy debris” as well. Buy a bag of sand to fill in any recently dug holes and if there are bare spots on the lawn then you may need to invest in some turf/sod.  Also, keep a toy bin handy so you can quickly retrieve the balls and toys left out by your fur-family.

3. | CARPET CLEANING

Being proactive can make the home selling process less stressful for everyone

There is nothing as off-putting as walking into a home that smells like “wet-dog” or worse… You may not even realize that Fido has left his mark. Before listing your home to sell it be sure to hire a professional carpet cleaning company or rent a decent carpet cleaner to deep clean and freshen up your rooms. This will also help ensure there aren’t any visual stains that may distract buyers as they look around.

4. | UNLEASH THE STRESS

Because the home selling process can be stressful for some people, do yourself and your pet a favor by going for a fast paced walk to help burn off that extra nervous energy.
